I’m writing this on New Years Eve and I honestly can’t believe how quickly this year has went by!
2017 has been such a busy year filled with wonderful, happy moments and lots of changes to our family. So I thought I would round up some of my favourite memories from the year gone by.
In years from now when I’m an old lady it will be so lovely to read back about the things that happened in 2017. I sometimes have this overwhelming fear that one day I will forget everything after years of seeing my Granny live with Alzheimer’s.
That is the beauty of writing this blog, I am documenting my thoughts and experiences throughout my life. It will also be fantastic for the boys to read up on it too, when they are big grown men with stubble ( I can’t believe that one day I will have three grown men calling me Mum!)
My generation.. I think we are called millennials?! We don’t have our early life documented, we have photos but no captions or thoughts on moments are written down unless your parents kept a written diary. The likes of Facebook and Instagram didn’t exist when we were growing up. One of the wonderful things about social media is that your memories and life moments are there at your fingertips to remind you of what you were doing at a certain time, to transport you back to an important moment in your life.
Oh gosh I’ve gone very “The Notebook” in this post, haven’t I? I’ll get started on some of my favourite moments from 2017.
Started my blog
I started The Mother Hen blog back in January. I finally plucked up the courage to put fingertip to keyboard and post about my thoughts and feelings, my good days and bad. It’s my little corner of the internet and I’m so incredibly proud of it. I’m no J.K Rowling and my punctuation is atrocious but I’ve had people message me to say they have read my posts and what I have written has helped them. To know that someone has taken the time to read my ramblings and that I have helped them in some way honestly means the world to me.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to read my blog and all my wonderful friends over on Instagram, you guys are amazing and your messages have given me so much strength and encouragement throughout the year.
Moving forward into 2018 and now that the boys are getting bigger I’m hoping to find more time to focus on blog posts and growing my blog even more. I also need to learn how to take better photos! But I’m learning this blog thing as I go and I absolutely love it!
Little Hugo was born on the 18th March after a very very quick exit from my tummy into the world, it feels as though he has always been here. We can’t remember what life was like before Hugo other than it must of been a lot quieter. Hugo is now 9 months old, nearly walking, eats everything- even marmite on toast!! Loves playing with Finley and Adam, loves Teletubbies and having raspberries blown on his tummy and of course lots of cuddles and kisses. Hates waiting on food and having his nose cleaned.
We still haven’t cracked the whole sleeping all night without wakening (because he wants Mummy and Daddy’s bed) but he’s a brilliant baby that makes us all smile and laugh he has completed our family perfectly. We love you Hugo and we can’t wait to see what things you will get up to in 2018.
I’ve had amazing opportunities to attend my first couple of blogging events this year. Totally pushing myself out of my comfort zone, arriving at events alone but leaving having made new friends with talented local bloggers, who have all made me feel so welcome into this new world that I’m not familiar with. I hope that in 2018 I will attend more blogging events and develop my knowledge. It’s been an amazing experience so far and I must say it’s nice to do something that’s for me. Being a stay at home parent is rewarding but you can lose a bit of your identity along the way, as your are constantly in Mum mode. Attending events and chatting to other bloggers about something other than bottle times and nappy changes has been a refreshing realisation that I’m still Kathryn not just Mum and how important it is to do things for myself.
I changed my diet to a plant based one at the start of October this year and I haven’t looked back. I actually wish I had of done it sooner. The more information I read, the more documentaries I watched I knew it was the right choice for me. I must say I’ve been absolutely loving the vegan lifestyle.
It’s reignited my love of cooking, I’ve tried new foods I wouldn’t of thought of trying before, cooking with flavours I didn’t know existed. My diet is more varied that what it ever was before.
Going vegan has made me think more about what I’m eating, how food is produced, what ingredients are in the foods that myself and family are eating which is something I never thought about before..I just ate the food. Supermarkets and restaurants have so many vegan options nowadays that I have found the transition an easy one. My only downfall is that I’ve replaced cheese with large tubs of hummus on a daily basis.. oops!
Last but not least the best times of 2017 have been the times spent with my family. Beach Days, Park Days, Mums and Tots, eating ice cream in the sun, feeding the ducks, rainy car picnics, Starbucks Sundays.
My wonderful husband Daniel who even when I’m grumpy always manages to make me laugh and helps with everything in the house without me asking, even the washing! As well as going out to work on a broken nights sleep.
Adam who has grown in confidence, and works so hard at school, knows all his times tables off by heart and is now teaching me my times tables! An amazing, caring, protective big brother he makes me so incredibly proud everyday.
Finley who has learnt so many new things this year and has grown from a tiny baby into a funny, loving, smart little boy. Finley became a big brother this year and fully embraced his new role. He helps with Hugo, he grabs Hugo his bottles and plays peek a boo to make Hugo laugh.. he does wallop Hugo around the head from time to time.. but hey! That’s what big brothers are for right?!
And little Hugo who just loves being a part of all the fun, loudness and madness that our house is filled with.
2017 you were truly wonderful and 2018, we are ready for you!
Let me know what the best moment of 2017 was for you.
Happy New Year everyone!
